Cat of the Month, May 2017: Rupert
They say that this is a cat’s world, and we just live in it. And never was the saying truer than with Rupert, a 12-year-old Tuxedo cat who is our May Cat of the Month.
“He’s the king of the castle,” agree owners Dey Brown and Paula Mills. “He rules over our dogs and any that visit. He fights with his cat brother, P-nut, but then spends the evening on one of our laps grooming P-nut and snuggling with him.”
Dey and Paula say that Rupert’s true personality really comes out when he’s hungry. “When he’s ready to eat and thinks we’re not catering to his needs quickly enough,” Dey says, “he knocks stuff off the counter with his tail and chews on anything plastic to make a very annoying sound.”
And one of Rupert’s favorite foods? Salmon—especially in the couple’s takeout sushi. But he also loves toy mice, hair ties, sleeping and sitting in boxes, and laying on his back in the middle of the floor. It is his castle, after all.
And that doesn’t end at bedtime. “He generally takes up the entire pillow in bed, or he just sleeps directly on top of us,” Paula says. “But despite all of these quirks, he’s very sweet and loving and a great companion.”
Named after a character from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Rupert also answers to Poopert, Poopybutt, and Rupie. He was found in July 2005 by a friend’s mother when Paula was living in Scranton, Pa. “He was a stray,” Paula says, “and he’d been shot in the side with a BB gun. I adopted him right away and then moved him to Seattle with me in 2008, tucked into a cat carrier under my airplane seat.”
Quickly nursed back to health as a kitten, Rupert is still no stranger to the vet. “Most recently, we brought him in to get a feeding tube as a result of not eating due to inflamed bowel syndrome,” Dey says. “Prior to that, Rupert had most of his teeth pulled. Not a full set of teeth between him and P-nut! He has become very familiar with all of the vets and techs at Rainier Vet.”
