Cat of the Month, November 2018: Emme

Palindromes are words and phrases that spell the same thing forward and backward, like bob, racecar, and a man, a plan, a canal: Panama. It’s almost like a cat chasing its tail; it just keeps going in a circle. So it’s fitting that the Rainier Veterinary Hospital November Cat of the Month, Emme, has a palindromic name because one of Emme’s favorite pastimes is chasing her tail.

“Emme is very sweet,” owner Lucinda O’Halloran says of the 12-year-old calico, who is Lucinda’s very first kitty. “She loves to play and explore as well as lap time. She’s even willing to travel when we go on car trips and stay overnights in pet-friendly accommodations.”

In addition to Bat the Mouse and Chase the Tail, another favorite game for Emme is called Hairband Hockey. “I snap my hairbands, and she chases them down the hallway,” Lucinda says. “Sometimes she’ll pick up a hairband with her claw, put it in her mouth, snap it, and then chase it.”

Is Emme searching for bugs?

Lucinda and Emme have been together since December 23, 2006, when Lucinda adopted the fur baby from San Diego by way of the Seattle Animal Shelter. Although Emme’s original name was Sandy—being from a beach town and all—Lucinda changed it the very first day.

“As I was buying supplies before bringing her home, the young woman at the pet store was very sweet and helpful,” she says. “That woman’s name was Emmy, so I named our kitty after her. But I changed the spelling so that it would be a palindrome.”

The many faces of Emme (clockwise from top left): Stretching, relaxing in the dryer, ready for work, feeling like a bobcat, and hiding in the jungle.

But the names don’t stop at just Emme. This beautiful girl also goes by Emmelita; Bug, Buglet, and Bugley (“because she loves bugs”); and Scrappy Dan (“because she used to scrap with other cats who encroached on her territory”).

Would Emme scrap with a person? Not a chance, although she might be cautious at first when meeting someone new. “But she warms up eventually,” Lucinda says, “especially if they’re cat people.”

Luckily, we’re cat (and dog) people here at Rainier Vet, so Emme has warmed up very well to us when she comes in for her monthly nail trims. In fact, she’s a great patient! We’ve loved getting to know her, and you too, Lucinda. Thanks for being part of our family!
