Dog of the Month, April 2018: Lyle
Socks. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, and they keep our feet warm and toasty. Unfortunately for Jay and Jane Spencer, socks also are irresistibly delicious for their 9-year-old Basset Hound, Lyle. “Despite our best efforts, he sometimes munches our socks,” Jay explains.
So when Lyle made a meal out of his owners’ footwear earlier this year, our doctors had to surgically remove them. Luckily, Lyle has fully recovered. His harrowing adventure, not to mention his absolutely lovable personality, have scored Lyle the honor of being named Rainier Veterinary Hospital’s April Dog of the Month.
Lyle has been a patient of ours since February 2009. “We adopted him as a puppy from a family who had an unexpected litter of Basset puppies,” Jay remembers. And it’s been a joy ever since. “Lyle is sweet, fun-loving, and affectionate,” Jay says. “He cannot hide his excitement whenever people get home or come over.”
This sweet pooch is great with Jay and Jane’s two sons, ages 6 and 3, and even sees himself as a tiny tot. “Lyle thinks he’s a lapdog, even though his 55 pounds make that pretty awkward,” Jay says. And if Lyle is feeling awkward or insecure himself, you’ll know right away because he chews on his ear.
His favorite things in life? “Lyle loves to sleep, approximately 23 hours per day, and loves any and all kinds of people food,” Jay says.
Named after the singer/musician/actor Lyle Lovett—a favorite performer of Jay and Jane—Lyle the Basset also answers to Lyle T. Basset. “We thought Lyle was a pretty good name for a Basset,” Jay says.
We think so too. Thanks for being part of the Rainier Vet family, Jay and Jane. Here’s to a sock-free diet for Lyle!
