Dog of the Month, December 2018: Rex
Could there be a more perfect time to celebrate Rex as the Rainier Veterinary Hospital December Dog of the Month than on his four-year “adoptaversary”? This lucky pup became part of his family in December 2014 and has been warming hearts and taking charge ever since.
Nicknames like Peluche (“teddy bear” in Spanish), Little Man, and, of course, T-Rex all perfectly sum up the personality and rambunctiousness of this delightful little pug mixed breed. Whether dragging his toy turtle through the house or wrestling with his favorite toy elk, Rex is always friendly, affectionate, and high energy. Nothing stops him as he thinks he a tough “big dog.”
Rex has been visiting Rainier Veterinary Hospital for about a year, but what brought him in this last month was when his health took a sudden, serious turn.
“We brought him in when he was very sick,” says Rex’s owner Lynette Barnier. “He suddenly stopped eating, peed in the house, and could barely walk. On top of that, he just looked so sad and not his lively self.”
Luckily, the veterinarian who treated Rex recognized the signs and symptoms of and provided a quick diagnosis of Addison’s disease, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce lower than normal hormones. Adrenal hormones are necessary to control salt, sugar, and water balance in a pup’s body. Rex was able to get the treatment he needed before he proceeded to get any worse.
“Part of Rex’s care included monitoring and daily fluid treatments from the caring and supportive veterinary team,” Lynette says. “I could tell he felt comfortable with all the vet techs and admin staff who came out to get him each day as he was always so happy to see them. Thanks to all the staff at the clinic, our beloved Rex is back to being our happy and high energy peluche. We are forever grateful!”
