Cat of the Month, January 2019: Mufasa

Mufasa, estimated to be about 15 years old, has had quite the journey to reach this point in his life. A street cat without a home, he found his way to Rainier Veterinary Hospital where he took up residence in our hearts. And that’s exactly why he’s the January 2019 Cat of the Month.

As an office cat, Mufasa works on computers ... sometimes literally.

Mufasa came to Rainier Vet after a neighbor noticed the stray whom she had been feeding started to act lethargic and was no longer interested in food. He seemed to be quite sick and now wasn’t moving, so she rushed him to our hospital. Upon examination it was revealed that Mufasa was anemic and suffering from inflammatory bowel disease. Luckily, we were able to get him the help he needed, which included fluids, antibiotics, a special diet, and vitamin B-12 injections. After a bath, shave, treatment, and lots of fluids, Mufasa was on the road to recovery.

And with that, his new story begins. First, a name. When we met this orange, scruffy stray, he had long, wild fur resembling that of a lion—thus, he was named Mufasa.

As with any stray, our hopes were to either reunite him with his family or put him in the care of one of the many agencies in the Seattle area who could help him find his forever home. (Learn more about what to do when you find a stray animal here.) We even featured him as our August 2016 Cat of the Month to help spread the word. But Mufasa wasn’t having any of that. He already knew where he wanted to stay. After a couple trips to shelters, he ended up back here. Determined to stay and be the Rainier Vet office cat.

All that work can be tiring. When Mufasa isn't "helping" in the office or letting out one of his scruffy meows, he can be found sleeping quite soundly.

“When I joined this practice just over a month ago, Mufasa was there to welcome me to the team,” says Marketing Manager Virginia Piper. “Frankly, it was love at first sight. He immediately took up residence on my desk, and I quickly adapted my workspace to fit all his needs. I am sure all the cat lovers out there can relate, right?”

Mufasa now spends his days cuddled on our desks, hanging out with the team in the breakroom, and basically sharing all the immense love he has to give. If he could be held 24/7, he would be the happiest cat in the world. And as Virginia says, “We will do our best, Mufasa.”
