Dog of the Month, August 2019: Chief

Sometimes it takes a village, or, in Chief’s case, a team at a local business with a big heart!

Chief, a 2-year-old male Pit Bull, started his life on a bit of unsure footing as his previous owner was going through a separation and Chief was left in the care of an individual who could not properly care for him. The employees at Wezee’s Plumbing became aware of the situation as it began to deteriorate and jumped in to action.

“It was truly heartbreaking to hear of Chief’s story,” said Tama, office manager at Wezee’s Plumbing. “We are all animal lovers here and two of our plumbers that share a home, and are lifelong friends, were ready to take action and help get Chief to a new home.”

Continued Tama, “It truly became a team project. I have done extensive Pit Bull rescue in the past, so I had plenty of tips to share and the owner of Wezee’s Plumbing offered to let Chief come to work every day. She even helped pay for Chief’s food and flea treatments for the first six months and also covered the costs of his neuter surgery.”

It was a bit of a rocky start for Chief with his new family. Because of his chaotic beginnings, he had some abandonment issues and did not have any foundational training. Luckily with consistent love and plenty of treats, Chief has learned a lot and has settled down into his new routine. He has proven to be great with kids and plays well with other dogs; always looking to run and play with new friends.

While Chief is relishing his new forever home, he also gets to call the office and crew at Wezee’s Plumbing his second family as well. They all help take part in his overall care and, well, let him run the office most of the week. Truly living the best life for a gregarious pup.

“Chief is loved by all, so as such, the crew has come up with a host of names for our unofficial mascot,” said Tama. “Sometimes you will hear a shout out for Cheefumms, Cheefboy, Bighead, Piggybutt and Mr. Man.”

At “work,” Chief enjoys playing with his fellow office mate and best bud; an older Shih Tzu. This little pup is quite feisty and makes a habit of stealing Chief’s favorite toys and bones so Chief will then take part in a game of chase. Best buds for sure.

Chief has been a patient of Rainier Veterinary Hospital since getting adopted into his new home. Recently, these visits became a bit more frequent as Chief began to have seizures about two months ago. After a thorough workup, Chief is now on a daily regimen of anti-seizure medications, which he will be on for the rest of his life.

“Chief has so many people that love him and walk him and buy him presents – he is just loved so much,” shared Tama. “When he wants to do something and you won’t let him he gets the funniest look and sort of gives you the side-eye like he’s trying to figure out how to get you to cave! He is not dumb that’s for sure!”

The team at Rainier Veterinary Hospital is so happy that Chief has adjusted to his new life and is doing well on his new medications. Surrounded by love and support, Chief is on the path to a long, healthy life.
